The ESIC (Esports Integrity Coalition) is a not for profit members’ association established in 2015 by key esports stakeholders. The goal of the group is to deal with issues around esports, in particular, the threat of match manipulation and betting fraud, and the challenges they pose to esports. Maintaining integrity in the industry is the utmost importance for the ESIC, as well as for UMG.
So where does that put UMG?
We are now part of the ESIC to join forces with other major esports companies to fight against the attacks on the integrity of esports. Even though they are our competitors, at the end of the day we need to come together for the sake of our communities and the industry. According to the ESIC, the most significant threats to esports are cheating to win using software cheats, online attacks to slow or disable an opponent, match-fixing, and doping.
By 2020, total esports betting handle (legal, regulated, illegal and unregulated) will exceed $150 billion. It’s important to note the most pressing and rapidly growing issue is match-fixing driven by betting fraud. That amount of money in one industry is vulnerable to organised crime, opportunists and gambling syndicates who see the opportunity to fix matches to earn a profit. As our community grows, we want to ensure the integrity of our community, and the industry itself is being protected and maintained.
Joining the ESIC will elevate the experience of our members and players to be as positive, fair, and safe as possible. By working with the ESIC we will be able to establish a solid anti-corruption code and regulations to ensure all our members are covered. The ESIC also provides education, close liaison and advice on problem matches, investigation and prosecution, and a voice in policy and strategy.
We are dedicated to combating all forms of corruption and cheating in the world of esports which is why becoming an ESIC member is key for our company and members. UMG CEO, Dave Antony said, “All of us at UMG believe in having the highest level of standards for ourselves, our products, and our gaming community. Joining the ESIC solidifies our commitment to our community and partners that we are making every effort to keep our gaming space fair and safe for all gamers everywhere, online and at live events.”
